Summary

Georgia Taylor (Coronation Street, Casualty) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show) join the cast as the crime drama returns for its seventh series. In the first of a two-part story, a suicidal man causes a train crash when he drives onto a railway crossing, killing 15 people. With Jake prosecuting, the man's defence barrister tries to prove his vulnerability and mental illness, but then a twist in the investigation leaves Sam's career hanging in the balance. Starring Bradley Walsh, Dominic Rowan and Paul Nicholls.

Review

All change! The beauty of no-frills procedurals is that you can change the personnel without troubling the formula. And so it is that our much-loved local Law & Order franchise returns with fresh faces. Harriet Walter gives way to Paterson Joseph (from Peep Show) as the new top cop, while Freema Agyeman’s prosecuting lawyer, Alesha, has been promoted and sent up north, presumably in recognition of her ability to crack any number of criminal cases at the last minute by walking into a room with a ring binder, having spotted something fishy in the phone records.

Her place on the opening titles is taken by Georgia Taylor (saucer-eyed Ruth from Casualty), who starts the episode as a defence barrister but will, we suspect, see the light and turn prosecutor. Meanwhile, Paul Nicholls returns as detective/emotional timebomb Sam Casey. In the last episode he endangered a prosecution by romancing a suspect. This time he assaults one instead.
