Episode 8: Barnhill

Summary

Geri and her husband Kevin bought an 18th-century property in Devon after falling for its gothic arches, quirky architectural features and a glass lantern-like cupola, but discovered it was in a critical condition. The expected budget for repairs quickly doubles and Geri has to take over management of the build herself - but then the true impact of trying to undo more than 200 years of amateur construction hits home. Caroline Quentin presents.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Barnhill in south Devon is an imposing white pile with an eccentric cupola and various ecclesiastical and neo-Gothic touches that, it turns out, were added long after the house was built. From a distance it looks fabulous, but years of damp and neglect mean it’s pretty well held together by cobwebs. And, as owners Kevin and Geri discover once they start stripping the house back, it wasn’t structurally sound to start with.

The project is a real money pit - just renovating the exterior cost double the original budget. “What was I thinking?” the unflappable Geri asks at one point. By the end, though she says, “I’m 100 per cent happy.”
