Episode 3: Natural World: Heligan - Secrets of the Lost Garden

Summary

The secret lives of the wildlife in the popular Cornish tourist attraction, set against the background of the gardening year. Charlie Hamilton James shoots footage highlighting a variety of creatures inhabiting the estate, including foxes at play in the pleasure gardens after the visitors have left, toads mating and the badgers that enter the tea rooms at night. Narrated by Philippa Forrester.

Review

Ever since Tim Smit lovingly restored the gardens at Heligan 20-odd years ago, visitors have flocked to Cornwall to see them. But while they exclaim at the magical pleasure grounds or the glorious fruits and flowers, no one seems to notice the pied wagtail nesting next to the pineapple pit, or the orgy of toads spawning beneath the surface of the pond.

Gorgeous photography from Charlie Hamilton James (of Halcyon River Diaries fame) reveals them all – badger cubs snuffling round vacated picnic tables, a sad-looking fox, dragonflies performing courtship gymnastics and sparrows pecking mortar from the garden walls. Filmed in exquisite detail throughout the seasons, this evokes the gentle pace and atmosphere of the place beautifully. In fact, I swear you can smell the loam in the potting shed.
