Episode 3: Utah

Summary

Ben travels to the canyons of Utah to meet 72-year-old twins Bill and Bob Stone, who fled their adrenaline-junkie pasts for a tough subsistence lifestyle as they also deal with the challenges associated with growing old. He joins the brothers as they go cattle-wrangling, rock climbing and skydiving, while Ben also discovers more about them and why they decided to cut themselves off from civilisation. Once parachute instructors, police informants and bounty hunters, they are now organic farmers who are preparing for doomsday.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

After the deserts of Namibia and the Alaskan wilderness, Utah doesn't sound too hostile. But don't tell that to septuagenarian twin brothers Bob and Bill Stone, former bounty hunters who live like Wild West outlaws in a secret location in one of the USA's least populous areas.

Straight away Ben is impressed to find he'll be sleeping in a cave that was blasted into a cliff with dynamite, and the more he gets to know the brothers, the more surprises emerge. They turn out to be, for instance, vitamin junkies, spending almost half their income on health supplements. They also have a survivalist's doomsday storehouse with a mystery door that Bill refuses to discuss, let alone open.

"If someone wrote a story of their life, it'd be a bestseller and everyone would think it was made up," remarks Ben.
