Review

This two-part pilot from 1984 is very much the Jessica Fletcher origin story as we see her achieve success with her debut novel (the luridly titled The Corpse Danced at Midnight) and solve her first mystery after a guest at a costume party is done in.

It would, of course, be the start of quite a career for Jess, both as an author and amateur sleuth, with Murder, She Wrote going on to run for 12 seasons. And this opener has many of the show’s cosily familiar elements: a doltish police officer (played here by Ned Beatty), a star-in-the-making in a minor guest role (Andy Garcia) and a big final reveal in which Jessica recklessly endangers herself while confronting the culprit.
