Episode 1: Jamie's Comfort Food

Summary

Jamie Oliver gives some of the nation's favourite dishes a twist, reinventing British classics like shepherd's pie, rustling up outdoor treats and transforming old-school desserts such as pavlova and sticky-toffee pudding. In the first edition, the chef takes on three comfort foods at his home in Essex, and he's joined by friend Christian, aka DJ BBQ, to reveal his ultimate burger - including what cut of meat to use, how to cook it and what to have on the side. Plus, Jamie's secret sauce recipe.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Dieters beware: Jamie Oliver is making luscious feasts out of old-school favourites. Even satiated viewers are likely to find themselves pawing the fridge or gnawing the remote control. For starters, there is a burger that would be easier to climb than eat. “It’s all right to eat messy, yeah,” he gurgles between mighty mouthfuls, wearing a mayo-ketchup moustache and beard. “You don’t want a polite burger.”

The main course is mac ’n’ cheese, made with mountains of cheddar, parmesan and gruyère, and tarted up with a lobster. Finally – on another halcyon, soft-focus summer day – he whips up marshmallow pavlova with the help of a cherub who turns out to be his son (and equally winsome in front of a camera). This is paradise à la Jamie.
