Episode 5: London Underground

Summary

Sasha is forced to work with her ex-husband Ned Hancock when their teams investigate the death of film critic Oliver Houghton, whose body was discovered floating in the Thames. UCOS delves into the victim's past and explores his link to the murder of a conceptual artist 20 years previously, while Hancock's knowledge of London's hidden past proves invaluable when a piece of occult footage from the 1970s plunges the investigators into the macabre world of human sacrifice. Tamzin Outhwaite and Denis Lawson star, with a guest appearance by Barnaby Kay.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

It’s almost embarrassing how much sharper Danny (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is than any other tool in the UCOS box. He solves tonight’s mystery almost single-handed, while Gerry, Steve and Sasha scramble along behind. Or rather, they take the mickey out of his (enjoyably) know-all tone as he rattles on about London’s secret rivers, their “psycho-geographical significance” and, er, the occult.

A film critic’s body has been found in a sewer in a case that connects to the unsolved murder, 20 years ago, of an artist who was caught up in some kind of secret society. The case brings Sasha up against her faithless ex, Ned, and Gerry up against modern art, which he dislikes almost as much. But in cases like this, it’s Danny who steals the show.
