Heroic screen dogs have been with us since the days that Lassie’s barks were deciphered in the nick of time (“What’s that, boy? Timmy’s stuck down a well?”). Down the decades, we’ve had Rin Tin Tin, the Littlest Hobo, Hooch and now Rex, the latest TV canine with amplified intelligence, who also happens to be the cop partner of Detective Charlie Hudson in the Major Crimes Squad.
Their bond forms the basis of this pleasant enough Canadian police drama, which finds likeable but bland series lead John Reardon suffering the indignity of having all his scenes stolen by a German Shepherd. But if you sign up to a show with this kind of premise, then that’s surely part of the deal?
