After years of speculation and rumours, The Witcher 4 has been officially announced by the franchise's video-game overseers from CD Projekt Red, although they haven't specified a Witcher 4 release date at this point.

This comes a few months after The Witcher season 2's arrival on Netflix (where you may have spotted a few nods to the games), and some seven years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt originally arrived on PC and consoles to huge amounts of critical acclaim.

CD Projekt has been busy with Cyberpunk 2077 in recent years, but now it looks like the company is ready to shift at least some of its focus to the development of the next Witcher game. Keep on reading to learn all about it!

Bad news, folks. The Witcher 4 release date is yet to be confirmed, with the rumours and speculation suggesting that it may not arrive until 2025 or even 2026.

When CD Projekt Red announced the game on its official website, the developers said: "At this point, no further details regarding the game – such as a development time frame or release date – are available." So we'll just have to wait for them to put a date forward. When they do, we'll be sure to update this page.

Which consoles and platforms can play The Witcher 4?

It seems certain that The Witcher 4 will launch on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S, but we'd be more surprised to see it launching on the older PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch systems. Only time will tell, though, as nothing has been confirmed on that side of things just yet. We'll be sure to update this page when we can.

Can I pre-order The Witcher 4?

There's no way to pre-order The Witcher 4 just yet, with the game not having any product pages at online retailers like Amazon or GAME at the time of writing. You could always buy The Witcher 3 from Amazon if you haven't played it already, of course, or if you just fancy giving it another play-through before the sequel arrives in stores.

What will The Witcher 4 story be?

When CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 4, the developers said in their blog post: "We’re happy to announce that the next instalment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise."

The bit about "kicking off a new saga" is certainly interesting. You could argue that the wording there suggests that CD Projekt Red is thinking long-term will this project, perhaps thinking about multiple DLC expansions or sequels as well as the fourth game itself.

On a basic level, we'd expect The Witcher 4 story to pick up with Geralt after the events of The Witcher 3 and its DLCs, but there are no clues yet regarding who the villains will be or what the main narrative thrust will entail.

It'll also be interesting to see if the game carries over any of your progress/decisions from the previous game, particularly the romantic choice you made regarding Triss and Yennefer. Only time will tell, of course.

What do we know about The Witcher 4 gameplay?

It sounds like CD Projekt Red is planning some big changes on the technical side of things, even moving the franchise to a new engine, which could have knock-on effects for The Witcher 4 gameplay.

The developers said in the blog: "This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.

"It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences."

At the very least, we would expect better graphics and bigger open-world areas to explore in The Witcher 4, and we'd expect there to be some combat changes too. We'll keep you posted as we hear more.

Is there a The Witcher 4 trailer?

There's no trailer yet for The Witcher 4. In fact, we only have one still image to go off at the moment. CD Projekt Red shared the following picture on all its key social media channels along with the blog post:

As soon as we hear any more, this is the page we will update for all things relating to The Witcher 4 release date - so keep it bookmarked so that you never miss the latest news.
