Review
by
Jane Anderson
Mr Charles Pooter and his charming lady wife Carrie have taken possession of a new London residence, more befitting their superior status. Or so the self-aggrandising Charles would have us believe. In fact, they are living in a less-than salubrious terrace in Upper Holloway, where their daily — and nightly — routines are accompanied by the thunderous roar of the steam trains at the foot of their garden.
Pooter is a comic creation from 1888 — a man who takes himself far too seriously, despairs at the injustices dealt to him by life and yet has such a good heart lurking beneath the pomposity that he is utterly adorable. Ed Reardon owes a lot to Charles Pooter, played here with real relish by Johnny Vegas.
Summary
First episode of Andrew Lynch's adaptation of George and Weedon Grossmith's Victorian comic novel. Charles Pooter, a clerk who dreams of improving his social standing, moves into a new suburban home with wife Carrie and son William. However, they frequently find themselves entertaining a string of unusual guests. Starring Johnny Vegas, Katherine Parkinson and Andrew Gower. From 2012.
