Summary

Part one of two. Ayisha Yahya recounts the history of a 600-mile railway track stretching from the Kenyan coast to Uganda that became known as the Lunatic Line, owing to the astronomical financial and human costs of construction. It was built by the British between 1895 and 1901 through hostile tribal lands and malarial swamps and, despite being an enormous engineering challenge, transformed eastern Africa beyond recognition.
