Episode 1: Pilot

Summary

Corporate buyer Amy embarks on a three-month holistic retreat after suffering a very public nervous breakdown. She returns a changed woman and vows to make a positive difference to the lives of others - but her friends, family and former colleagues are less than impressed with her. Comedy drama, starring Laura Dern, Luke Wilson and Diane Ladd

Review

HBO’s new show comes with top credentials: it’s created by star Laura Dern and actor/writer Mike White, and co-stars Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd and Luke Wilson, while the pilot is scored by fêted movie composer Carter Burwell.

You can’t exactly call it a comedy – stressed office manager Amy Jellicoe (Dern) has a very public meltdown, but after a spiritual retreat in Hawaii returns determined to bring her new awareness of life to her family and workmates. And whether you enjoy it will depend on your reaction to Amy. Either you’ll want to slap her – her self-help platitudes come thick and fast – or you’ll relate to her attempts to put her car-crash life in order. But Dern is fabulous and, at times, the writing is painfully acute.
