Episode 1: Alexander the Great

Summary

The historian takes to the railways of Greece and Turkey as she learns about the Ancient Greek civilisation. Her journey begins in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, home of Alexander the Great, and visits a museum featuring a burial chamber for ancient Greek royalty. She heads south to Delphi to see the magnificent ruins of what is possibly the greatest ancient site in the world

Review

David Butcher

Following her outings Ancient Egypt by Train and Ottoman Empire by Train, Alice Roberts takes another grand tour full of sunshine, antiquities and friendly local experts. Nice work if you can get it — and if you can avoid bumping into Bettany Hughes filming a similar show.

The idea is to loop around the Aegean from Thessaloniki in northern Greece to the site of Troy in Turkey, taking in museums, ruins and the kind of views that coach trips park up for. Not every treasure Roberts finds is wildly telegenic, but several are, to use her favourite adjective, “stunning”. A Macedonian wreath made of gold in the shape of delicate oak leaves and acorns is wonderful: you wish the camera would dwell on it longer.
