Episode 3: Berlin

Summary

The actor explores Berlin, visiting the arty Propeller Island City Lodge - a hotel where guests can fulfil their fantasies by sleeping in lion cages, coffins or rotating beds. At the Schlosshotel in affluent Grunewald, cabaret dancer Romy Haag talks to Richard about her affair with David Bowie, who stayed at the hotel while living in the German capital in the 1970s

Review

It’s willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to Berlin, a city that, despite its turbulent history, has long had a reputation as a party town. And after the full-on opulence of the previous episodes, it’s refreshing to nose around some more bohemian retreats.

The echoey (now sadly closed) corridors of the Jazz Age relic, the Hotel Bogota, for example, make up in character what they lack in luxury, while the quirky Propeller Island City Lodge is a shabby-chic steampunk fantasy where you can sleep in a coffin or a cot.

The sheer variety of styles on show makes this the pick of the series so far.
