Episode 1: Traces

Summary

Emma Hedges' return to Dundee to start a new job brings her mother's unsolved murder into sharp focus as she fights to bring the killer to justice. However, before she makes the journey back to her home town, a fatal fire in a nightclub proves ominous. Crime drama by Amelia Bullmore, based on an original idea by Val McDermid, starring Molly Windsor, Laura Fraser, Martin Compston and Jennifer Spence

Review

“I think I would remember if my sister’s body was dismembered!” is one of my favourite lines of dialogue in this wobbly forensic science crime drama, co-created with writer Amelia Bullmore by bestselling novelist Val McDermid.

Young Emma, played by Molly Windsor (Three Girls) arrives in Dundee, her home town – though she has a northern English accent – to start a new job as a lab technician with the city’s cheery, largely female forensic science team. But an online course gives Emma a nasty shock and turns her into an amateur sleuth, to the dismay of her boss Sarah Gordon (Laura Fraser).

Of course, Emma, whose every move is dogged by daytime-TV music, has a Long Buried Pain…
