Review

When journalist Lisa Lynch discovered at 28 that she had breast cancer, she did what writers do – she wrote. Her blog won her an army of followers who admired her candour and refusal to become some kind of stereotypical “cancer patient”.

In this dramatisation Lynch, who died in 2013 aged 33, is played by Sheridan Smith, and we follow her through a mastectomy and a gruelling course of chemotherapy.

Throughout, Lynch’s constant companion is her laptop and she blogs about her life and feelings, striking a chord with strangers facing their own lonely struggles. Paul Nicholls is her devoted husband Peter, part of a wider support network that includes her parents and brother.

Of course, The C-Word is all about Sheridan Smith as she’s in nearly every scene, but it still stands as a testament to Lisa Lynch, a woman determined to wrest her life from a terminal illness.
