Episode 2: Apple Tree Yard

Summary

Yvonne shuts down in the aftermath of the attack, unable to report the crime to the police or open up to her husband. Things only get worse when her attacker begins stalking her, progressing from e-mails to following her. Terrified, she turns to Costley for support. He arranges a meeting at a safe house and she becomes tempted to enlist his help in getting revenge. Gary makes a startling admission on the morning that Yvonne prepares to accompany Costley as he seeks out her attacker - which leads her into an even worse situation.

Review

After such a thrilling awakening in her erotic encounters with a total stranger, geneticist Yvonne (the great Emily Watson) is now in hell. She’s been savagely sexually assaulted by a colleague at a party.

Numb with shock and fury, Yvonne tries to scrub away the horror. But nothing can get rid of the pain, shame, and fear. She can tell no one of what happened, for fear of upending her comfortable life, her job and her marriage.

Amanda Coe, who adapted Louise Doughty’s bestseller, sugar-coats nothing (neither does Doughty in her book, incidentally). The brutality of the attack has dreadful consequences for Yvonne, who can confide only in the man whose name she does not know (played by Ben Chaplin).

This is a bold, adult drama that looks in the dark, festering corners of our personalities, the places where we habitually hide. Once they are brought into the light, all is lost.
