Episode 1: Fire

Summary

Jenny must trust her instincts, as her father's dementia worsens, her son turns 18, and her now live-in boyfriend Liam is confronted by his own push and pull with death. In the opening episode, it's Ross's 18th birthday and Jenny and Donovan investigate a devastating fire in a low-income apartment block. As Jenny begins a new chapter of her life, she connects with a woman who has lost everything. Meanwhile, Dr Allen makes a change, Liam reconnects with an old friend, and Matteo calls Ross out on a lie. Crime drama based on MR Hall's series of novels, starring Serinda Swan as a Toronto doctor helping the police investigate unusual murders

Review

Not to be confused with the axed daytime show starring Claire Goose beloved by RT readers, this is instead a rougher, tougher Canadian drama inspired by Matthew Hall’s crime books.

If you’re familiar with the novels, you’ll be aware that Jenny Cooper’s patch is Bristol, but here the action has been relocated to Toronto where, at the start of season two, our coroner-cum-detective is dealing with a devastating fire at a run-down apartment complex that may have claimed the life of a baby. Cooper’s own backstory is no less traumatic and, pretty soon, professional and personal issues are melding in disquieting ways. Might the pressures of the job be causing Cooper’s mental health to fray?
