Episode 2: Broadchurch

Summary

Ellie and Hardy start to investigate Trish's life and talk to her ex-husband Ian, her best friend's partner Jim, and taxi driver Lucas - all of whom were in the area when the attack took place. The detectives need Trish to give her main video interview, which will be relied on in court if the case goes that far, but she is still traumatised. Hardy decides they should go ahead, but Trish brings the interview to a premature end when they ask her a question she is not prepared to answer. Crime drama, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman.

Review

Though there is a new case at the heart of Broadchurch, Danny Latimer, the boy murdered in series one, isn’t forgotten. The lives of the people that once revolved around him must go on, though they are for ever altered.

The love between his parents Mark and Beth lies bleeding from a wound that will never heal. There’s a wrenching scene between them (Andrew Buchan and Jodie Whittaker are heartbreaking) as we see how far Beth has come, while Mark struggles with the injustice of seeing his son’s killer walk free. He later angrily tells sympathetic local vicar Paul Coates (Arthur Darvill) “[Joe Miller’s] still out there, still living.”

It’s a measure of writer Chris Chibnall’s skill that he seamlessly blends the stories of people we know with those of Broadchurch’s new personnel to make a richly detailed tapestry. We learn more about rape victim Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) and begin to assess the suspects.
