Episode 1: Human Cargo

Summary

Bedfordshire Police investigate banging coming from inside a refrigerated HGV lorry that recently passed through Dover after crossing the Channel. Inside, they find a three-year-old girl, her five-year-old sister and their mother, as well as 12 other migrants who have been smuggled into the UK. The police now face a race against time to ascertain whether they have been illegally trafficked into the UK and deliberately imprisoned in the refrigerated container for more than 17 hours, or whether they have smuggled themselves aboard the lorry without the knowledge of the driver or transport company

Review

There’s banging coming from the inside of a refrigerated lorry parked at Toddington services on the M1. The police respond to 999 calls and get the lorry’s back doors open. From inside emerge 15 illegal immigrants, including a mother and father from Iraq with their two young daughters.

It’s the start of another gripping but sad visit to Luton police station, where some of the immigrants end up. Light relief comes from custody sergeant Darren Turney. When it looks as if the migrants may have a mystery virus, the station goes into lockdown. “Do you watch The Walking Dead?” he asks a colleague. “This is how it starts, a deadly virus. This could be the start of the zombie apocalypse.”
