Episode 21: The X Factor

Summary

Last week Gifty Louise left the show after a sing-off with Four of Diamonds - a controversial exit that hit the headlines. Now the rest of the acts will no doubt be feeling nervous, fully aware that nothing is certain as they perform songs made famous by boy bands and girl bands. As ever, Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne are the ones to impress - as well as the voting public. Dermot O'Leary keeps things ticking over.

Review

There’s a fine line between nostalgia and a good old-fashioned rehash – and The X Factor’s definitely been walking it this year. From Simon’s insistence that everything his acts do has never been done before (does he think long-term fans have amnesia and can’t recall the same songs being performed year after year?) to Honey G’s raid of Jedward’s back catalogue of novelty mash-ups (not so nice, nice, baby) it feels as though we’re stuck in a neverending cynical cycle.

But hey, at least Louis is back to break the rules of Simon Says by shouting down the table at his boss and bantering with dear old Dermot.
