Episode 4: Smother

Summary

In the aftermath of the birthday party, the family is in disarray, with Elaine insisting she has been set up, but fingers are being pointed in every direction. Val's sights remain firmly set on Finn, but Jenny is beginning to see him as a person she can really count on, and when a saviour emerges from the most unexpected quarter, even Val has to recognise that she may have been following the wrong lead all along

Review

Well, that was a car crash of a party, wasn’t it? When will the Aherns learn to stop throwing these big celebrations? In family dramas like this, they always end up with someone in hospital, in jail or dead.

Inevitably matriarch Val (Dervla Kirwan) blames Finn for spiking Elaine’s drink but while we know that’s not true, Finn’s murky criminal past does catch up with him. As the entire Ahern family is harbouring dark secrets, he should fit right in.

However, after a dramatic turn of events, Val has second thoughts about him. “All these things that are happening,” she ponders, “If it’s not you, then who is it?”

Review

Nothing says “I’m watching you” clearer than a random park bench plonked on your drive and facing your home, does it? This is what Val (Dervla Kirwan) wakes up to find and, of course, she’s convinced Finn (Dean Fagan) is responsible. The man is a bit creepy and has a massive talent for eavesdropping, which is handy when everyone in the tumultuous Ahern family is harbouring a dark secret.

It’s all horribly fraught, so obviously the best thing to do is have a big party to celebrate Calum’s (James O’Donoghue) birthday. Although if you recall, someone died at the last family bash, so maybe that’s not such a good idea.
