Episode 4: Ross Kemp: Living with Forced Out Families

Summary

The film-maker investigates how the housing crisis has resulted in some vulnerable families agreeing to be moved by local councils - sometimes many miles away from loved ones - just to keep a roof over their heads. He meets a mother of three whose temporary accommodation across London has ended up being her home for three years so far, and also hears from families in Bradford who say that refusing an offer of accommodation 200 miles away would bring shocking repercussions. Last in the series.

Review

Kemp is good at diving into stories, finding tough problems just off the radar of the news. This week, he looks at a by-product of the wider housing crisis, meeting council tenants who have been given accommodation miles from their home turf.

Jade’s family has lived in East London for generations but Tower Hamlets council placed her in a nasty converted office block on an industrial estate in distant Wimbledon. It’s 90 minutes’ travel from the rest of her family: in theory the arrangement is temporary but she has been there for three years. It’s worse for Nick and his children, previously from Chatham in Kent, who have been moved 200 miles away to Bradford.
