Episode 7: The Prince's Master Crafters: The Next Generation

Summary

Equipped with craft and guile, the time is now for the students to impress as the Prince awaits their graduation piece

Review

In the series finale, “the Next Generation” get to show their graduation pieces to the Prince of Wales at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. But it’s a sign of the times that illness prevents one of the six making the first recce of Dumfries House, the inspiration for their final project, in East Ayrshire — and then a different crafter has to drop out on the day of the presentation itself.

Weaver Sani uses plants gathered at Dumfries to make dyes, a Murano chandelier takes the eye of stained-glass artist Francesca… and HRH is suitably dazzled with all the results. As an aside, we learn the history of the estate, bought by a consortium in 2007 and now the home of the Prince’s Foundation, and the then-and-now comparisons show a spectacular transformation.

The series has been a great advert for heritage crafts, and as a detailed study of the creative process, it’s been a triumph.
