Review
The workshop is alive to the sound of scoring, tapping and instructions such as “Solder the flange in place”. The crafty youngsters must make a leaded stained-glass window, after being briefed by expert Derek Hunt. It’s a fiddly but mesmerising discipline, whose magic is nicely nutshelled by Hunt as “controlling and painting with light”.
Not even the leftfield interjections of presenter Jim Moir can break the students’ stride, and the results are remarkable. Meanwhile, a detour takes Moir to Canterbury Cathedral to view what he calls the “comic-book stories” of the 12th century, the Miracle Windows, and the painstaking work being done to preserve them.
