Doctor Who: Joy to the World

Summary

The Doctor checks in to a time travelling hotel in future London, and quickly discovers a sinister plot is afoot. Following the clue through a succession of eras, he discovers that the fate of the universe revolves around an ordinary woman seeking solitude at Christmas. Nicola Coughlan guest stars with Ncuti Gatwa in the 2024 Christmas special

Review

David Brown

Time may be a relative concept for the Doctor, but for fans, the year 2025 has been momentous. First, we had Ncuti Gatwa’s regeneration into Billie Piper, then came the end of the BBC’s production deal with Disney, which was followed by news that we’d now have to wait until late 2026 for there to be another new adventure. So, if it’s a Christmas special you’re after, this episode from 2024 will have to suffice.

It comes from the bigger-on-the-inside brain of Steven Moffat, whose script checks the Doctor into a hotel that possesses the secrets to time travel. Also staying there is lonely guest Joy (Nicola Coughlan), who finds herself caught up in a plot involving a mysterious briefcase and a hungry T rex.
