Episode 3: Time Wave

Summary

A ship from the 23rd century is washed up from the past and the Dwarfers run into a crew where criticism is illegal. When they protest they are arrested and threatened with draining of all critical thoughts. However, Rimmer's bitterness about his childhood comes in handy in beating the draining machine, his inner critic and the system, at least for a while. Johnny Vegas guest stars.

Review

The Dwarfers encounter a ship of Earthlings where criticism is illegal, a law which is policed by (among others) Johnny Vegas looking rather splendid in a pink “Crit Cop” uniform. This show has always been quite adept at tackling chewy philosophical conundrums with sanity and infectious silliness, and it would be a fool who has a bad word to say about tonight’s parable on free speech and political correctness.

Rimmer (Chris Barrie) seems especially taken with a world where his every appalling character trait is deemed above reproach; but the lads need to prove that outlawing scorn and ridicule can lead to disaster and (in this particular case) certain death.
