Episode 5: Les Miserables

Summary

Paris stands on the brink of revolt during the funeral of General Lamarque. Enjolras leads a group of protesting students and workers to construct a barricade in the streets, while an increasingly desperate Valjean fears for Cosette's safety and arranges for her to go into hiding as Javert's search for them grows ever more relentless. Marius scours the city for the missing Cosette, assisted by a heartbroken Eponine - but when he cannot find her, he is left consumed with despair and decides to join Enjolras at the forefront of the uprising

Review

The warmer currents of the plot are starting to flow together. People still do things for no clear reason. Why is police chief Javert quite so fixated on catching Valjean, even as Paris descends into chaos? He just is. Why is Thénardier similarly obsessed with Valjean? He just is. But if the script sometimes fails to flesh out characters, it has finally given us a romance to root for, in the growing love of Marius and Cosette.

She finds herself alone in that beautiful house with the walled garden: just the place for a moonlight meeting… Meanwhile, around them revolution is stirring: “All we need now is one spark to set off the powder keg and Paris will go up in flames…”
