Summary
Cosette has grown into a teenager, and to Valjean's dismay, questions her closeted life and is desperate for a new start in Paris. The opportunity presents itself when she meets Pontmercy's son Marius, who has turned his back on his family after learning the truth about his father, and now lives in a squalid tenement, where he catches the eye of the daughter of a criminal family. Javert ascends through the ranks of the police, and believes he is closing in on his goal

“Lies, violence, cruelty! That is the world,” explains Jean Valjean (Dominic West) as he tries to keep his young “niece” Cosette (now played by Ellie Bamber) protected from it, behind closed doors. The souring relationship between them is at the heart of tonight’s instalment, which may be the best yet, though we’re required politely to avert our gaze from contrivances that probably sit better in a 1,200-page novel than a six-part drama.
There are more of the enjoyably ripe performances in minor roles, including David Bradley glowering for France as nasty old royalist Gillenormand and Adeel Akhtar back as poisonous liar Thénardier: fate is determined to bring him and Valjean together.
