Episode 4: First Dates

Summary

Romcom fan Becky dines with fellow 36-year-old Leigh. As their date kicks off, so does a Manchester United game, which Leigh is keen to get an update on. Other participants are Val, 78, who meets 82-year-old ex-welder Roy, and singleton Del, 36. Her date is musician Michael, who has let his work get in the way of love until now

Review

Everyone walks into the First Dates restaurant with high hopes that they’re about to meet “the one” because they’ve all been incredibly well matched by the programme-makers. So it’s heartbreaking for us — and them, obviously — when dessert arrives and there’s no spark.

One couple seem to have loads in common, but in a furtive phone call he reveals he’d like her to be half a foot taller. Oh, come on – really? Another pair both admit to a lust for life, although his emphasis is on lust. And Michael announces, “People find it quite taxing to be in my company for any extended period of time.” That doesn’t bode well for bubbly date Del.
