Episode 5: Fleabag

Summary

Claire and Fleabag return to their father's home for an annual family gathering to mark the anniversary of their mother's death - but this time there is an unwanted guest. Fleabag gets into a confrontation with her godmother, who reveals her plans for a sexually charged art exhibition. Comedy, written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Review

It’s glorious seeing Olivia Colman play entirely against type as Fleabag’s truly unpleasant godmother. She manages to say things in a lovely tone – while beaming – and make them sound like venom. As Fleabag turns up to the annual memorial dinner of her mum who died of breast cancer, the godmother says, “I hope you don’t mind my being here but my pilates fell through,” before she pops off to get the champagne.

The episode is a perfect display of a middle-class family desperately not wanting to cause a scene, so that the tension is almost unbearable. But away from the dinner table, Fleabag and godmother have an encounter that will leave you reeling.
