Episode 4: Fleabag

Summary

Claire takes Fleabag to an all-female silent retreat. What should be a period of peaceful solitude is disrupted by some explosive secrets coming to light, a surprising connection with an old acquaintance, and an unusual neighbouring workshop. Comedy, written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Review

There’s a heart-twistingly beautiful monologue that comes, rather surprisingly, from Mock the Week’s Hugh Dennis. When Fleabag reluctantly goes on a silent retreat with her sister, during which she talks constantly, she encounters the bank manager who she once flashed her bra at in a desperate attempt to get a loan.

In a really moving scene, the bank manager reveals himself to be broken and overflowing with regret, just like our heroine. “What do I want?” he asks himself slowly. “I want to apologise to everyone, I want to go to the theatre, I want to take clean cups out of the dishwasher and put them in the cupboard at home and the next morning I want to watch my wife drink from them.” The best episode so far.
