Slovakia v England

Summary

Slovakia v England (Kick-off 8.00pm). All the action from the final Group B game for both countries, which takes place at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne. England need a point to guarantee their progress, but will also hope to top the group and make their potential last-16 opponents that bit easier. These sides have only met three times in the past, with the most recent clash coming in a friendly encounter in March 2009. Wayne Rooney netted twice in a 4-0 win at Wembley Stadium that night, with Emile Heskey and Frank Lampard also on the scoresheet. The format of the tournament this time means that four of the teams finishing third in their group will progress to the last 16, along with the winners and runners-up. Presented by Mark Pougatch, with commentary by Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle, and analysis from Ian Wright, Peter Crouch and Lee Dixon.

Review

It’d be nice to think that England will, by the time they run out in Saint-Etienne, be comfortably atop Group B. Surely they’ve cruised to four, or maybe six, points against Russia and Wales? If not – and let’s be honest, it rarely pans out like that in major tournaments – the last thing they want is to face a committed underdog that beat Spain in qualifying by defending proudly and counter-attacking swiftly… uh-oh.
