Episode 5: The Problem Solvers

Summary

The new TGS cast member forces Jenna and Tracy to question their demanding ways when they realise that he is nothing like that, while Jack offers Liz a talk show

Review

A dexterous and curious Goffin’s cockatoo unclips presenter Chris Packham’s watch strap with great delicacy. He and his fellows are clever birds, capable of complex thought and action. Just watch as one swiftly undoes a series of complicated locks on a box to retrieve a nut. It’s brilliant.

Packham looks at the ability of animals to problem-solve, a skill that became apparent when Jane Goodall filmed chimpanzees using twigs to remove ants from mounds. He marvels not just at a bird’s ability to think in the present, but also at its ability to plan ahead by “caching” or having the foresight to store food. In a fascinating experiment, we watch as a group of birds very quickly latches on to the fact that they need to put food to one side for lean times.
