“I offer you sun, fun and sin!” says Michael Portillo rather saucily in his introduction to the pulsating but hilly Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

He starts his long weekend by taking an exhilarating ride aboard the “deliciously vintage” No 28 tram, which he reveals takes you everywhere you could possibly want to go in the city. One of those places might be the tiny shop where he’s fitted for a splendid pair of leather gloves by the delightful, beaming proprietor Carlos.

While Michael always explores the culture and history of a place, he’s equally keen on trying the local cuisine — as often as possible. To that end he happily tucks into goose barnacles, salt cod salad, convent cakes, pork crackling sandwich and piri piri chicken.
