Summary

Sound anthropologist Tom Rice opens up how ways of listening shape each person's relationship to the world around them, and how a busy world places more demand on our ears. With the pace at which technology is developing, can we even be sure of what it is we're listening to? Recognising the vast scope and extraordinary complexity of listening can sharpen perception, making it easier to thrive in the complex sound world of the 21st century

As one would expect, the soundscape for a programme with a title like this is extraordinary and it’s definitely worth using headphones for the full effect. From eavesdropping to unconscious bias, via semantic, ecstatic, palimpsestic and even “visual listening”, Dr Tom Rice presents a fascinating guide to the 100 ways in which we (and other animals, plants and even inanimate objects) react, respond to and process the vibrations that create sound waves.

He’s been researching this for 20 years. And Rice’s favourite way to listen? In the warm water of a bath where you fall into what is known as a “sound state”. Just don’t take the radio in with you.
