Summary
Kevin McCloud meets Michelle Parsons, an artist and teacher who decided to seize the day and build her own private hideaway in a woodland environment in Essex after she recovered from a serious illness. Together with her architect husband David, Michelle planned to construct a sleek, black-clad, three bedroom house complete with an art studio. However, torrential rain and a potentially disastrous gas leak stalled progress on the build, and as construction gets under way, Kevin wonders whether the couple's decision to eliminate windows on two sides of the property may leave them living in a gloomy bunker

Artist Michelle Parsons and her husband, David, have been through some dark times and are now determined to make the most of life by building the woodland hideaway with studio they’ve always wanted.
Kevin McCloud’s not too sure about their almost windowless design, though: “It looks like a bunker on the outside and it feels like a bunker on the inside at the moment,” he says grimly halfway through the build.
The end result – several black cubes joined together with roof lights and a sedum roof – is only a stone’s throw from the “tarmac and polite pavements of suburbia” in Billericay, Essex, but a million miles away from conventional architecture.
