In these challenging times when we can’t gather friends and family around us for a chat about the news or what we’ve seen on telly, let alone watch something together, the Gogglebox families have been a perfect substitute. There’s something reassuring about seeing familiar faces and realising they’re sharing your lockdown experiences: not knowing what day it is, failing to keep up with online exercise classes, watching daytime TV and eating too much. That sort of thing.
But the programme is more than that because whether it’s the Siddiqui brothers’ incisive comments about the Government’s handling of the pandemic or Jenny and Lee’s hysterical reaction to Ricky Gervais’s outrageous black comedy After Life, they often reflect what we’re all thinking and feeling. There have been criticisms from a few quarters, mainly questioning whether they’re really socially distancing, but the viewing figures don’t lie – nearly four million watch every week now.
Of course, as so many of us are still stuck at home with only the TV for company, we’re all Goggleboxers now.
There are no live broadcasts scheduled for this show. But it is available via the streaming providers below.
