Episode 6: Posh Pawn

Summary

James Constantinou's manoeuvring skills are put to the test as he drives a client's 40ft motorhome, and the Prestige Pawnbrokers boss also jets off to Marbella, Spain, with gem expert Kristen to value some precious jewellery. A self-confessed shopaholic hopes to sell two modern art paintings to pursue a new career in photography, while a woman decides to get rid of some of her designer handbags to raise cash for her hair extensions business

Review

This resolutely sunny series is at its best when the clients aren’t moneyed Surrey-dwellers with hoards of precious trinkets. The human interest angle is better served by the likes of Roy, who this week tries to pawn his luxury 40-foot motor home.

Roy isn’t a poor man by any means, but his story is rather unusual. He lost a leg following not one but two horrendous accidents, and now wants to raise money for a specialist holiday park catering for the less able-bodied and their families.

It’s the biggest item that Prestige pawnbrokers have ever dealt with, and enthusiastic owner James Constantinou can’t wait to take it for a test drive. As valuable crockery crashes around the living compartment, passenger Roy looks understandably nervous.

James is also smitten with a speedboat moored in Spain. “It’s fast and red, and that’s the sort of thing I’m interested in,” he says. So off to Marbella he trots, ostensibly for a business trip. But it’s basically just an excuse to relax in the sun. Life can be so hard sometimes.
