Episode 1: Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo
Summary
Review
What’s this? Michael Portillo walking rather than taking the train? And wearing a beanie and waterproofs rather than natty blazers and trews? It’s because he’s making an ambitious pilgrimage along the South West coast path in the hope it will revitalise him after a year of confinement.
We’re spoilt for celebrity travelogues, but this one has more depth than most. Apart from Portillo’s have-a-go mentality (he’s kayaking here), his interactions and observations are rooted in local history, geography, art or nature, rather than being an opportunity for an amusing set-up. And, of course, the scenery is glorious, even when it rains.

Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo
Summary
The presenter travels across the two counties in south-west England. His journey begins in North Devon under the shadow of England's highest sea cliff, the 1,000ft-tall Great Hangman, and finishes up on the stunning three-mile golden sands of Woolacombe. Along the way, Michael is joined by Raynor Winn, whose bestselling book The Salt Path is based on her experiences of walking the South West Coast Path with her terminally-ill husband, Moth. She tells of how it changed their lives, and offers tips and advice for Michael's journey ahead, and how he should prepare for the challenges, both physical and emotionalReview
