Episode 2: Auckland to Wellington - Don't Fall in a Volcano

Summary

On the second leg of Griff Rhys Jones' epic North south tour of New Zealand's back roads, he decides the best way to avoid highway one is to start by flying over it and heading straight to the Coromandel Peninsula. On the way, he spies Auckland's many extinct volcanos. Griff later heads out to the newest piece of land on the planet - the ever-expanding White Island volcano

Review

“Don’t fall in a volcano” Griff Rhys Jones is told. As much of this leg of his off-highway trip is over or near several terrifying volcanic hot spots, it’s good advice. Especially as the day after he visited White Island off New Zealand’s north coast it started “grumbling”.

There are a lot of geo-thermal attractions between Auckland and Wellington so Griff discovers the natural way Maoris cook food, how steam can generate electricity and, in the Bay of Plenty region’s Hell’s Gate, how a wallow in a hot spring can turn you into a “swamp thing”.

One sequence to look forward to is Griff white water rafting. He’s understandably petrified.
