Episode 1: Cape Reinga Auckland - Make Yourself at Home

Summary

Griff Rhys Jones embarks on an epic journey from the tip to the toe of New Zealand, but has set himself a challenge to avoid Highway One and journey the Kiwi roads less travelled. He begins his trip at the very northern point of New Zealand, Cape Reinga, and is welcomed by a Maori chief of the region and challenged to make himself at home

Review

Griff Rhys Jones has visited New Zealand before but for this tip-to-toe trip he takes the roads less travelled to learn what it means to be a Kiwi today. There was no preview available, but it sounds as though Griff was often taken out of his comfort zone.

After sliding down sand dunes, fishing in “the Hellhole of the Pacific” and admiring an outdoor art gallery, he ends this leg of the trip in Auckland, the centre of which
— according to press reports — did not impress him. However, at least a Maori tribe made him feel at home by giving him a rendition of God Save the Queen in Maori.
