Episode 1: National Treasure

Summary

Robbie Coltrane stars as Paul Finchley, one half of a much-loved comedy double act, whose life is turned upside down when he is arrested after an accusation of rape that dates back to the 1990s. Paul adamantly denies having even met the woman making the allegation and his loyal wife (Julie Walters) must decide whether to stand by him, while his troubled daughter (Andrea Riseborough) begins to question her relationship with her father

Review

Paul Finchley is an old-school comic, once beloved of British television audiences, now the faded half of a successful double act. His star has fallen and his career is in slow retreat, though he’s still a “face”, the host of a popular daytime quiz show.

But Finchley’s world disintegrates when the police hammer on the door of his beautiful house in an exclusive neighbourhood. A woman has made a rape allegation, claiming Finchley attacked her in the early 1990s.

The implosion is swift in Jack Thorne’s impressive drama, which is clearly based on the events and personalities surrounding Operation Yewtree. Twice after his arrest Finchley (an impressive Robbie Coltrane) confronts the poison: “They think I’m Jimmy f***ing Savile.”

Julie Walters is heartbreakingly stoic as Finchley’s long-suffering wife, a woman used to her husband’s serial infidelities. And Andrea Riseborough is brilliant in a lacerating scene as Finchley’s troubled daughter.
