Summary
DCI Stanhope and her team, including new recruit DC Hicham Cherradi, travel to a remote country house when the woman looking after it is killed. No sooner have they arrived, than a second body is discovered. Vera discovers the two victims met the night before their deaths, and goes in search of a connection between them. Forensics evidence reveals that one was definitely present when the other died - but when no murder weapon or motive can be found, Vera begins to suspect a third party was involved

A terrified young woman runs through woods, as terrified young women tend to do in crime dramas, straight into the path of a car. The victim was house-sitting at a huge, isolated mansion in a beautiful Northumberland valley, and when Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope investigates, she finds another body.
In this adaptation of Ann Cleeves’s The Moth Catcher first shown in 2016, the redoubtable Vera (Brenda Blethyn) opens up old wounds as she looks into the lives of friendless, unhappy and lonely people. Some alive, some dead. One man tells her how he’d once left the valley “to see the what the world had to offer. I got as far as Middlesbrough, and came right back.”
