Episode 2: The Time Traveler's Wife

Summary

Henry and Clare try to reset with a second date, but she still struggles to rectify this Henry with the man she knows and loves. Starring Rose Leslie and Theo James

Review

It’s almost 20 years since Audrey Niffenegger’s debut novel hit the bestseller lists. A film followed a few years later, and now Steven Moffat (no stranger to the idea of travelling through time) has adapted Niffenegger’s romance for HBO. Game of Thrones’s Rose Leslie plays Chicago art student Clare, and Theo James (Sanditon) is librarian Henry. They meet by chance – except it isn’t. Henry is an accidental time traveller, who tends to appear and disappear at random; but he always arrives stark naked. As he says, “I can’t keep hold of the current moment, I just slide off.” And their first date doesn’t go quite to plan.

There’s a lightness of touch to the dialogue that helps offset the tricksiness of the essential plot explanation (not to mention James’s wig situation), and you’re happy to follow the story of a love affair that’s defined as much by absence as presence.
