Episode 1: Paris Police 1900

Summary

Crime drama set in early 20th-century Paris. The French Republic is in turmoil as rumours spread about the release of Dreyfus, previously arrested for spying. In French

Review

Beginning in 1899, this eight-part French noir exposes the underbelly of the Belle Epoque as a seething brew of anarchism, antisemitism and casual, often violent misogyny. Commissioner Louis Lépine (Marc Barbé) comes out of retirement with the aim of transforming Paris’s Sûreté into a “modern, effective police force”, first by installing a telephone, and he seems a kindly, progressive sort – despite his flair for flaying rabbits.

As well as navigating the brouhaha on the streets, his underlings must identify a woman’s torso found sealed in a suitcase, hauled from the Seine. You might sense the focus should be on impulsive young detective Antoine Jouin, but the actor Jérémie Laheurte (an ex-model) treads an indistinct line between intensity and intensely dull.

Far more interesting is the character of courtesan Marguerite Steinheil, who existed in real life. In the opening scene, she’s “present” at the death of President Félix Faure, who expires in the throes of their love-making, earning her the moniker “Deadly Lips”. Marguerite is obliged to turn police informant and inveigle herself with the Guérins, the vile family behind the Anti-Semitic League.
