Cunk on Shakespeare

  • Comedy

Summary

Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe star Philomena Cunk presents a comedic documentary about William Shakespeare, despite knowing absolutely nothing about him. She leaves no stone unturned as she gets to the bottom of the Bard, visiting his birthplace, exploring the Globe, and studying priceless artefacts. The commentator also interviews six different experts, including renowned actor Simon Russell Beale, Educating Yorkshire teacher Matthew Burton, and Shakespearean scholar Professor Stanley Wells.

Review

Philomena Cunk – the awful reporter from Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe, played with precise, implacable idiocy by the superb Diane Morgan – hosts a special tribute to the Bard. “I’ve been studying Shakespeare ever since I was asked to do this programme, and it turns out he was more than just a bald man who could write with feathers.”

Cunk’s script is loaded with as much misunderstanding and malapropism as the English language can bear, so there’s a quotable laugh in every line, but the roars come when she does an Ali G on contributors who (we choose to believe) are not in on it.

Simon Russell Beale deserves an award for completing Hamlet’s soliloquy under extreme duress.
