Episode 1: The Boyfriend Experience

Summary

Lucy Lawless stars as Alexa Crowe, a former cop-turned-private investigator called upon to provide professional support and advice to ex-colleague and long-time friend Detective Inspector Kieran Hussey. In the opening instalment, she is lured into the world of murder and mystery when asked to look into the death of a woman who fell from the balcony of a male escort. Thriller, co-starring Bernard Curry

Review

Lucy Lawless made her name fighting mythological gods as Xena: Warrior Princess, but in this Australian mystery series she’s using her wits rather than her fists playing sassy private investigator Alexa Crow. It’s breezy but bog-standard fare, with Lawless perfectly fine as the irreverent PI. The opening case, which centres around a suspicious and lecherous male escort, is serviceable, too.

I did, however, find myself wondering why the regular mentions of Alexa’s name weren’t setting off people’s Amazon devices. Maybe they’re not big sellers in Melbourne? But when that’s the main preoccupation rather than the actual plotline, perhaps the series needs to be throwing a few twists in the direction of its audience.
