In Season 3, Chummy struggles to adjust to life as a housewife and mother, Trixie's feathers are ruffled when Jenny is promoted, and a routine check-up leads to heartache for Shelagh.
Jenny (Jessica Raine) is back in the welcoming bosom of Nonnatus House after spending time away to recover and to nurse her broken heart. But, though she’s returned to her devoted friends, Jenny decides that memories of the East End are too raw, and she needs a change of scene. So she dons one of those lovely puffy-sleeved uniforms to work on the maternity ward of the London Hospital. Really, though, it’s not where her heart lies.
Back in Poplar, Call the Midwife does its usual heartbreaking job of examining the often brusque treatment a nascent NHS dealt to men and women in 1950s Britain when a young mum shows all the signs of terrible post-natal depression. The solution seems so barbaric. But maybe your real sadness and empathy will be handed to Chummy (Miranda Hart), who suffers a ghastly visit from her chilly, distant, thoroughly awful mother.
