Summary
Trixie's feathers are ruffled when Jenny is promoted, but the new Acting Sister has more to worry about after a mother-to-be reveals the baby she is carrying was not fathered by her husband - and to complicate matters, the real father is black. Cynthia is inspired by a lecture on natural childbirth, convinced it will help an overly anxious patient, while Alec and his friends try to persuade Jenny to join them on a CND march. Review
Prim Jenny Lee is promoted to senior midwife and, once she’s placed the sister’s bonnet on her dainty little head, she gets all bossy with her pals from Nonnatus House. Trixie is particularly put out by Jenny’s new-found confidence and her iron fist, but such squabbles can’t be allowed to get in the way of work.
As ever, there are East End mums bellowing in labour or nervous about the prospect of childbirth. Nurse Miller hopes that a doctor’s revolutionary new ideas about pain and relaxation might help one timid mum to overcome her fears. Another mum is an old hand. “I’ve ’ad three already, I don’t need no looking after,” she tells Jenny. But it turns out that she’s secretly terrified.
